Muscat: Oman Met Office has issued weather alert stating chances of cumulonimbus cloud activity and occasional thunderstorms accompanied by active downward winds and flow of wadis over the Hajar Mountains and their adjacent areas extending to the deserts during the afternoon and evening on Thursday.


The expected amount of rainfall is 10 to 45 mm. The alert starts from 1pm until 10pm on Thursday.


Rains were recorded yesterday in Dakhiliyah and Al Buraimi.


Local formations are expected to continue to appear at noon and evening today, in parts of the Hajar Mountains, the impact is to be experienced in Al Dhahirah, Al Dakhiliyah, Al Buraimi and North Al Sharqiyah Governorates, with chances of occasional thunderstorms and downdraft winds causing dust rising. The speed of the downdraft wind is expected to range between 15 to 45 knots and it could effect horizontal visibility.


The general weather forecast issued by Oman Met Office stated that it would be partly cloudy to cloudy along the coast of Dhofar governorate and adjoining mountains with chance of isolated rain and intermittent drizzle, while clear to partly cloudy skies with medium and high clouds advection would be experienced over most of the governorates with chances of light isolated rain over South Al Sharqiya and Al Wusta coast. There are also chances of low-level clouds or fog patches along parts of the coastal areas of Oman Sea and Arabian sea.


Along the coastal areas of Oman Sea winds are expected to be easterly to northeasterly light to moderate occasionally fresh. While over the rest of the governorates, winds will be easterly to southeasterly light to moderate occasionally fresh over desert and open, and along the Arabian Sea coasts it will be southerly to southwesterly moderate to fresh.


The highest temperature was recorded in Ibri and Buraimi with 47 degrees Celsius high and a low of 33 degrees Celsius low.
