In the trial operation phase of the Silal Central Market for fruits and vegetables located in Khazaen Economic City in the Wilayat of Barka, the Consumer Protection Authority convened a crucial meeting with relevant stakeholders. The meeting aimed to foster collaboration among various institutions and advance sustainable development goals.
The session brought together the Consumer Protection Authority, suppliers and wholesale dealers of fruits and vegetables in the Sultanate of Oman. The meeting was led by Walid bin Ali al Rawahi, Director-General of the General Directorate of Consumer Services and Market Surveillance. The focus was on strengthening existing cooperation, addressing challenges and proposing solutions to benefit the public. The Authority emphasised its commitment to support both suppliers and consumers at the Silal Central Market.
The Silal Central Market stands as a major national project, highlighting Khazaen Economic City’s role in the food security sector. The market serves as a key platform for marketing, exporting, importing and re-exporting of fruits and vegetables. It also acts as a vital marketing outlet for local agricultural products from producing companies and farmers.
Remarkably, within a day of its opening, the market received 600 trucks from various parts of Oman and 68 trucks from international origins via a single inspection platform.
Al Rawahi underscored the Authority's ongoing support across sectors, aiming to achieve significant returns for both providers and consumers. He noted that the cooperation at the Silal Central Market is expected to boost economic recovery, diversification and trade activity. Continuous efforts are being made to ensure the availability and stable pricing of fruits and vegetables, safeguarding consumer interests and market stability.
Furthermore, the Authority reiterated its commitment to regulating the market and warned against any unauthorised price hikes. The presence of the Authority’s office in the Silal Central Market is intended to support suppliers and monitor market dynamics.
Salem bin Sulaiman al Dhahli, CEO of Khazaen Economic City, said that the Silal Central Market is a national initiative that strengthens Oman’s position in the fruits and vegetables marketing sector and creates investment opportunities with local added value.
During the meeting, stakeholders discussed ensuring consistent product availability and preventing exploitation of market variables. They agreed on mechanisms to maintain product supply and price stability across Oman’s markets.
