MUSCAT: Veolia, a global water and environmental services specialist, has made significant strides in Oman, showcasing its commitment to sustainability and innovation. Under the leadership of Pascal Grante, CEO of Veolia Near and Middle East, the company has achieved notable milestones that reflect its dedication to ecological transformation, decarbonisation, and resource regeneration.
One of Veolia's standout achievements in Oman is the successful operation of a solar farm in Sur. Opened a year and a half ago, this solar farm has substantially reduced the energy consumption of Sur's main desalination plant by 30% through the use of solar panels. Pascal Grante reiterates the significance of this project, stating, "This energy brought by the sun is fully decarbonised. Through the technology of reverse osmosis, which helps produce high-quality water, in addition to the solar panels, we provide a sustainable source of water to a large population in Oman today."
Veolia's commitment to sustainability is further exemplified by its GreenUp Roadshow, which recently highlighted the company's successful water activities and landfill sites in Oman. The GreenUp strategy for 2024-2027 outlines Veolia's dedication to ecological transformation through decarbonisation, depollution, and resource regeneration. This strategy is already bearing fruit in various projects across the country.
The company's desalination plants are a testament to its expertise in water management.
In Salalah, Veolia operates a plant producing 113,650 metres³ of water per day. The Sur desalination plant, powered entirely during daylight hours by a photovoltaic park, produces 131,000 metres³ of potable water daily. Barka IV, the largest desalination plant in Oman, produces an impressive 281,000 metres³ of water per day. These plants not only ensure a consistent supply of high-quality water but also demonstrate Veolia's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
Veolia's operations extend beyond water management to include waste management through its operation and maintenance of landfills. The company manages six major landfill sites in Oman, including those in Duqm, Suhar, Al Multaqa, Barka, Ibri, and Al Buraimi. These landfills handle industrial and municipal waste, showcasing Veolia's capability in managing diverse waste streams and contributing to the country's environmental sustainability.
In the oil and gas sector, Veolia's operations at bp Khazzan and PDO Rima further highlight its versatility and expertise. These projects underscore Veolia's ability to provide sustainable solutions across various industries, reinforcing its position as a leader in resource management.
Another milestone for Veolia Oman was celebrated on May 20 in partnership with Nama Water Services. The company produced 3.5 million metres³ of water for the South Al Sharqiyah and Al Dakhiliya Governorates, a remarkable achievement that underscores its commitment to excellence in water services. This feat was accomplished without any Lost Time Injury and involved increasing plant capacity by 2,400 metres³ per day — a 70% increase — through various overhauls and improvements over just three years.
