SALALAH, JULY 3
Established in June 2010, the Al Najd Project has quickly become one of the largest investment endeavors in the Najd region of Dhofar Governorate. This ambitious initiative has set its sights on revolutionizing agricultural production and sustainability in Oman, aligning itself with national goals to enhance food security and optimize resource utilization.
The Al Najd Project is driven by a set of comprehensive objectives aimed at transforming the agricultural landscape. Foremost among these goals is the effective contribution to enhancing food security within the region. By increasing the local production of main crops, the project aims to reduce dependency on imports and ensure a stable supply of essential agricultural products.
The Al Najd Project spans a vast area, with its farms collectively covering 54,000 acres. Among the notable farms are Hanfeet Farm, Dawkah Farm, and Wadi Bani Quwait Farm. These extensive farming operations are integral to achieving the project's ambitious production targets.
The annual production of fodder stands at an impressive 12,000 tonnes, while the overall production capacity for all crops reaches 20,000 tonnes. These figures underscore the project's significant contribution to the region's agricultural output.
Sustainability is at the heart of the Al Najd Project's mission. The initiative places significant emphasis on the sustainable management of water resources, a critical concern in an area prone to water scarcity. By adopting innovative irrigation techniques and efficient water use practices, the project seeks to maximize agricultural output while conserving this precious resource.
The Al Najd Project is not limited to a single type of crop; it encompasses a wide range of agricultural activities. The project focuses on the production of animal feed, which is crucial for supporting the livestock sector. Additionally, it produces other essential agricultural crops such as oil crops, palm trees, dates, lemons, wheat, and various vegetables. This diversity not only caters to the dietary needs of the local population but also supports the broader agricultural economy.
A key component of the Al Najd Project is its commitment to research and development. By investing in cutting-edge R&D programmes, the project aims to boost production efficiency. These efforts are designed to enhance the overall productivity of the farms, thereby increasing the company's total returns. Such initiatives also play a pivotal role in ensuring that the project remains at the forefront of agricultural innovation.
The Al Najd Project is also dedicated to supporting the local workforce, boasting an Omanization rate of 42%. This commitment to employing Omani nationals not only enhances the project's social impact but also ensures that the benefits of its success are shared with the local community.
Through its multifaceted approach, the Al Najd Project is poised to play a crucial role in securing the governorate’s food supply, optimizing resource use, and driving economic growth.
