Muscat: Oman’s foreign policy gained the respect of countries and peoples. Oman has become an oasis of peace and a trusted destination to play the role of a mediator to resolve disputes and reach understanding through dialogue.

The success of the Sultanate of Oman’s policy began from within as the government harnessed the best capabilities to build the people and care for their health, thought and culture and provided them with the means of a dignified life through enacting laws that preserve people’s rights in a state of well-established institutions.

In light of the changes and events around the world and the conflicts transpiring in the Middle East region, politicians, researchers and specialists in political and security affairs confirm the success of the Sultanate of Oman’s policy in dealing with various issues which gained it the trust of governments and peoples as a mediator for peace.

Saud bin Ahmed al Barwani, a former ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to Iran, says: “The success made by the Sultanate of Oman in resolving the nuclear dispute between Iran, the European countries and America was based on the belief of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said in the importance of saving the region from a devastating war that would leave nothing behind and the efforts during that period resulted in the avoidance of a third world war.

He added that Omani politics always adopts an approach of peace with all countries and embraces a position of non-hostility to anyone which is why Oman has always stood with all the sisterly and friendly countries at an equal distance from all.

“The Sultanate of Oman is a neighbouring country to Iran and the relationship between the two countries is strong. The relationship has never affected Oman’s relationship with the Gulf countries. From my point of view, Iran does not have any hatred for the Arabs despite some differences that emerged throughout history, but at the present time I do not see any Iranian hostility towards the Arabs. Iran cannot be ignored and that the Iranian government and people have great respect for the Sultanate of Oman which was manifest in all the occasions that brought us together with the Iranians during my stay in Iran,” Al Barwani concluded.

Dr Badriya bint Mohammed al Nabhaniyah, a researcher and lecturer in history, said that the Sultanate of Oman’s relations with its Gulf and regional surroundings are a model to be emulated especially when it comes to the issues that affect regional security. Oman has always positioned itself as a moderate country and has always been clear in its vision towards Gulf and regional files. It has expressed its foreign policy honestly and categorically. Its continuous call to dialogue and understanding is a starting point for resolving any problems that occur in the Gulf and the wider region. This has qualified it to carry out its good efforts to resolve current issues over the past five decades, which have plagued the region with many wars, disputes and transformations. It has also been a mediator in resolving some files within the Gulf Cooperation Council. She added that the Sultanate of Oman has been able to maintain strong relations with the Gulf countries without compromising its relations with the rest of its neighbours in Yemen, Iran or any other Arab country.
