MUSCAT: The Musandam Governorate is experiencing a significant transformation with numerous infrastructure and tourism projects underway. These developments aim to attract tourists globally and boost local and foreign investments.
Sayyid Ibrahim bin Saeed al Busaidi, Governor of Musandam, highlighted the urban development in residential areas and city centers, mentioning that various projects are at different stages of completion or consultation. The governorate has effectively utilised its allocated RO 20 million from the Governorates Development Programme for the current five-year plan.
One key project is the multi-purpose fishing port in Dibba, which is 75% complete and expected to finish by mid-next year. This port, managed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, is anticipated to spur economic development in the region.
The Dibba - Lima - Khasab road project, initiated earlier this year, has progressed significantly, with over 55 kilometres of the preliminary road constructed. This road is crucial for facilitating traffic and boosting tourism within Musandam.
For the new Khasab Airport, several tenders related to soil, wind, and design consultancy studies have been awarded by the Civil Aviation Authority. The airport, with a capacity of about 500,000 passengers, is expected to be operational during the eleventh five-year plan.
At Khasab Port, a company is currently investing in and managing the port facilities, preparing feasibility studies scheduled to conclude by October 2024. A long-term management agreement will be signed if the studies prove economically viable.
In tourism, investment lands in Bukha, Madha, and Dibba have been assigned to various investors. The Omran Group is redeveloping a resort in Dibba, and construction at "Ras Al Amud Resort" in Khasab is progressing well. Additionally, a Club Med resort is set to be completed in 2028 in Khasab.
The development of waterfronts in coastal states and Lima Province is also underway. The Khasab (Bassa Beach) waterfront is 95% complete, expected to be fully ready by August. In Dibba, the waterfront is 50% complete, while Buja's waterfront is over 40% finished. The Lima district waterfront is currently in the design stage.
Recognising the environmental richness of Musandam, especially its marine areas, a royal decree established the National Natural Park Reserve. This initiative defines areas of high and low environmental sensitivity, guiding environmentally friendly investments that do not harm natural resources or marine life. The governorate collaborates with the Environment Agency to develop legislation, identify best practices, and manage the reserve's environmental and tourism sectors.
Community participation is a priority, with the Governor’s Office and various government institutions engaging citizens, youth, and the private sector through sessions and dialogues. Improved digital communication has enhanced this interaction. Musandam International Investment Company, a local community entity, is making significant investments, employing local people, and adding value through its operations in various sectors, including industry, contracting, fish farming, and retail.
The establishment of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority branch and the opening of a business centre last May provide emerging investors with an encouraging environment for growth. This initiative has spurred economic activity in the governorate.
In the health sector, Khasab Hospital and Madha Hospital are in the final stages of internal preparations and are expected to open within the current five-year plan, enhancing healthcare services in the region.
Overall, Musandam is gearing up for a period of robust development, aiming to create a more vibrant, economically prosperous, and environmentally sustainable governorate.
