Athletes face significant challenges during Eid days in maintaining their physical shape and adhering to strict nutritional regimes. As many prepare to represent their country in regional and international events, they must maintain strict dietary discipline to avoid obstacles posed by high-calorie Eid meals and sugary foods.
Haitham Sadiq, an Omani bodybuilder coach, noted that Eid meals typically include rich, heavy dishes and traditional sweets such as halwa, which are prevalent in Omani households.
"During Eid, my advice to athletes following strict diets is to ensure they continue their nutritional programs. While enjoying Eid meals, athletes should limit heavy and sweet foods to maintain a balanced diet," said Coach Haitham. He recommended specific dishes suitable for athletes, such as oil-free white rice and Shiwa lamb, in moderate portions.
Responding to inquiries about social traditions and dietary restrictions, Coach Haitham suggested athletes explain their dietary needs to family members during gatherings. He emphasized that while nuts and fruits are acceptable, athletes should avoid excessive sugar and sweetened foods.
Coach Haitham stressed the importance of regular meal times to maintain energy levels and nutrient absorption, crucial for effective training and recovery. “Proper hydration is essential for athletes to perform at their peak, especially during Eid when festivities can lead to increased fluid loss. All the athletes advised to stay hydrated in hot weather with water, liquids, and sugar-free fresh juices. I encouraged athletes to choose beverages that replenish electrolytes without added sugars, ensuring sustained hydration without unnecessary caloric intake,” he added
“Even during Eid, allocating just 45 minutes daily to physical activity can significantly contribute to maintaining athletes' fitness levels and calorie burning. In the event of gym closures, athletes may perform some cardio exercises to ensure continuity in their fitness routines. It is important to have balanced management to enjoy Eid festivities without compromising on the set training goals and targets or the overall health." Coach Haitham ended.
