Eid Al Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, corresponding to the Haj pilgrimage to Mecca. The celebration begins with the Eid prayer either in an open space or in the mosque. After the prayers, families and friends come together to exchange greetings and share traditional meals.

Central to the observance of Eid Al Adha is the sacrifice of an animal, typically a sheep, goat, cow, or camel.

"Eid Al Adha encourages selflessness and generosity, as Muslims are encouraged to share their blessings with others, particularly those who are less fortunate by sacrificing an animal and distributing its meat to those in need," says Ronya Naboulsi, a wellness coach.

The meat from the sacrificed animal, she adds, "is divided into three parts: one-third is given to the needy and less fortunate, one-third is shared with relatives and friends, and the rest is kept for the family. This act of sharing emphasises the importance of charity and compassion towards others, especially those in need."

Eid Al Adha is also known as the feast of sacrifice."It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah’s command. However, before Ibrahim would sacrifice his son, Allah provided a ram to sacrifice instead. This event symbolises submission to the will of Allah and is celebrated with great reverence and joy by Muslims worldwide," she explained.
