More than one million pilgrims streamed into a giant tented city near Mecca, Saudi Arabia, under a scorching sun on Friday as the Haj pilgrimage got underway against the grim backdrop of the Gaza war. Eid Al Adha corresponds with Haj, one of the five pillars of Islam that holds immense significance in the lives of Muslims.
Religious obligation is one of the Haj's key aspects and significance. "Haj is obligatory for all adult Muslims who are physically and financially capable of undertaking the journey at least once in their lifetime. It's a demonstration of submission to The God's will and a reaffirmation of faith," Ronya Naboulsi a wellness coach, said.
Haj, as she noted, "is a massive gathering of millions of Muslims from all over the world, fostering a sense of community, brotherhood, and solidarity. It's a time for Muslims to connect with each other, share experiences, and support one another in their spiritual journey." The rituals of Haj have a connection with the Prophet Ibrahim (PBUP).
"The rituals of Haj trace back to Prophet Ibrahim and his family, particularly his wife Hagar (Hajjar) and their son Isma'il (Ishmael). Many of the rituals performed during Haj commemorate events in their lives, such as Hagar's search for water (which led to the discovery of the Zamzam well) and Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son, which was ultimately replaced by the sacrifice of an animal," she mentioned.
Haj is also considered as a journey of Sacrifice. "Hajj involves various rituals that require sacrifice, both literal and symbolic. Pilgrims endure physical hardships, such as long walks and crowded conditions, as well as emotional sacrifices, such as leaving behind family and worldly comforts. The ritual of sacrificing an animal symbolizes Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son for Allah's sake and serves as a reminder of obedience and submission to Allah's will," she said.
Haj symbolises the unity and equality of the Muslim Ummah (community) regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or social status. "All pilgrims wear simple, white clothing (Ihram) which eliminates distinctions of wealth and status. Standing shoulder to shoulder in prayer, performing the same rituals, and circumambulating the Kaaba emphasizes the equality of all believers in the eyes of Allah," she pointed out.
Haj is also a journey of spiritual cleansing and renewal. "Pilgrims seek forgiveness for past sins, repentance, and purification of the soul. It's an opportunity to start afresh and to strengthen one's connection with Allah," she noted.
Completeness of Islam is another of the Haj's key aspects and significance. "Islam is considered complete with the institution of Haj. It encompasses physical, financial, and spiritual aspects of worship, providing a comprehensive framework for Muslim life. Abu Huraira (RA) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The performance of Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous ones. And the reward of Haj Mabrur (i.e., one accepted) is nothing except Paradise." Haj is a deeply spiritual journey that holds immense significance for Muslims worldwide. It's a testament to the faith, devotion, and unity of the Muslim community and serves as a reminder of the values of sacrifice, humility, and submission to the will of Allah.
