MUSCAT, JUNE 10

The National Hospitality Institute announced the launch yesterday, June 10, 2024, of a hospitality vocational programme to empower young professionals.

The Employment Enabling Programme was launched in collaboration with Oman Arab Bank, and will target 100 students in its first edition.

Speaking to the Observer, NHI Principal Robert Maclean emphasized the significance of the programme. “We're delighted to join up with Oman Arab Bank to provide a facility where young people can receive vocational training that leads to employment. This has been a challenge lately, as there aren't many systems available to support vocational training for young people.” He added: “Our industry is known worldwide for providing job opportunities, often to those who are lower-skilled, less educated, or from lower economic backgrounds. It has helped many people secure good-paying jobs. NHI is proud of our nearly 30-year history with great success stories. For example, we now have almost seven hotel managers in Oman who came through our training programs. This success highlights the value of vocational training, which is often seen as inferior to higher education. Vocational training suits some people and must be available to ensure fairness and equality.” According to Maclean, the programme will start after Eid with a duration spanning four to nine months.

Chief Retail Banking Officer at Oman Arab Bank, Khalid al Amri, said, “The tourism and hospitality sector is a critical pillar for diversification in Oman, offering significant employment potential due to its rapid growth. We're delighted to partner with the National Hospitality Institute, a key player in training Omani youth for the sector's job market.” He went on to add, “This partnership reaffirms OAB's commitment to supporting the development and growth of our national talents. We recognize the importance of collaboration to empower young Omanis and enhance their skills across all sectors. Through this programme, OAB will provide financial support to participants, enabling them to gain the necessary skills to thrive in this dynamic market.” According to NHI, the programme will be delivered through a hybrid learning model, and will highlight essential areas including customer service, management and culinary skills. Interested candidates can apply through the institute’s website.
