Muscat: To ensure better safety standards, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion (MOCIIP) issued a decision on Sunday to regulate the packaging and sale of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders that are used for cooking purposes.

The decision 185/2024 stipulates that MOCIIP is responsible for regulating this business and prices of cylinders will be determined after the approval of the Ministry of Finance.

As per the decision, the current users must replace their units with an ID-based cylinder made of iron or fiberglass within three years from the date of implementation of this decision, which is May 28.

*First-time users must pay a one-time insurance fee or deposit

* All customers must move to ID cylinders within 3 years

* Cylinders must be made of iron or fiber glass

From December 6, the customer will have to pay a one-time insurance or deposit to obtain it, which will be determined according to the type, capacity, and size of the cylinder.

The deposit amount will be between RO5 and RO15, depending on the size of cylinders made of iron, and between RO15 and RO30 for cylinders made of fiberglass.

The current users can replace the cylinder they own in exchange for obtaining the ID cylinder without paying the insurance

amount within three years of the decision.

The decision stipulates that it requires a license to practice the activities of filling and selling LPG cylinders, and the user pays the amount to the person who sells the gas cylinder, and the seller delivers the amount to the person engaged in the filling activity.

The decision explained that it is possible to recover the insurance or deposit when the user returns the cylinder without obtaining another one.

However, the insurance amount will be confiscated if the cylinder is lost or misused.

The decision authorized the ministry to impose one or more penalties, ranging from a written warning to an administrative fine not exceeding RO1,000, suspension, and cancellation of the license.
