MUSCAT: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has achieved a remarkable milestone in the QS World University Rankings for 2025, soaring 92 places to secure the 362nd position globally. This ranking marks the highest ever in the university's history, reflecting over a year of sustained efforts and significant advancements.
SQU demonstrated considerable improvement across several key QS indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation, employment outcomes and sustainability. The university's strategic investment in fostering strong, long-standing relationships with academics and researchers worldwide has positively influenced its academic reputation index.
HH Sayyid Dr Fahd bin Al Julanda al Said, Vice-Chancellor of SQU, expressed pride in this achievement, emphasising its alignment with Oman Vision 2040. He highlighted that this progress fulfils the university's first strategic goal of ranking among the top 500 universities globally by 2030, setting a strong foundation for achieving further strategic objectives.
Dr Tariq Mohiuddin Mohamed Ghulam, Director of SQU's Strategic Project on International University Ranking, extended gratitude to the university's administration for their support and guidance, as well as to the internal and external contributors for their cooperation.
The employment sector's collaboration with SQU has been pivotal, with coordination from the National Records Center of the Royal Oman Police and the National Employment Programme significantly boosting job reputation and employment outcomes indicators.
Her Highness Sayyidah Dr Mona bint Fahd al Said, Assistant Vice-Chancellor for International Cooperation at SQU, highlighted that this advanced ranking underscores SQU’s strategic role on the global stage. She stressed the importance of sustained efforts and continuous improvement to maintain and enhance the university’s global standing.
The QS World University Rankings 2025 introduced the Sustainability Index, where SQU ranked 286th globally in 2024. Additionally, SQU's academic programmes achieved notable rankings: petroleum engineering was rated 35th, library management ranked between 51-70, and nursing placed between 51-100 globally.
SQU continues to support and enhance its postgraduate programmes, offering 121 programmes across various colleges with around 1,200 students enrolled. The Deanship of Scientific Research manages 594 ongoing projects with a budget of RO 8.7 million, encouraging research that addresses critical issues and provides practical solutions.
