MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman athletes captured a total of ten medals including three gold, three silver and four bronze at the West Asian Athletics Championship that concluded in Basra city in Iraq on Saturday.
Oman’s Men and Women’s relay team impressed as both teams managed to earn gold medal in the 4x100m relay event. The women team clinched the gold after they cleared the distance in a timing of 48.27 seconds while Iraq team finished second after they clocked 48.63 seconds and Iran team in third place with a timing of 49.36 seconds.
Oman team sprinters emerged as the fastest sprinters at the Men’s 4x100m relay event as they won the gold medal in the race in a time of 39.78 seconds while Iraq team came in second place with a timing of 40.32 seconds, while Saudi Arabia team finished third.
The other silver medal was won by Azza al Yaarubi, who managed to win silver medal earlier in the women’s 100 metres event, claimed another silver in the Women’s 200 m event in 24.77 seconds.
Oman’s athlete Moahmmed al Saadi, who was among the Men’s relay team, captured another bronze medal in the 200 metres event in 21.01 seconds. The gold medal went to Saudi Arabia sprinter Abdulaziz Abdu Atfi with a timing of 20.62 seconds and Benyamin Yousef came in second as he clocked 20.89 seconds.
The jumper Salim al Rawahi won another bronze medal in triple jump event when he cleared 15.40 metres while Saudi Arabia athlete Sami Mousa claimed the gold medal with a remark of 15.48 metres and Zain al Deen Sabeh from Iraq with 15.43 metres.
Commenting after the podium ceremony, Oman’s women relay team member Mazoon al Alawi, expressed her happiness with the achievement and she said:” We did not expect to win gold medal in this event. It is great accomplishment despite the short period of the technical preparations for this championship. This triumph will give us more encouragement for the forthcoming events,” she ended.
Earlier in the championship, Salim bin Abdullah al Rawahi claimed bronze medal in the men’s long jump with a distance of 6.91 metres while Sprinter Mazoon al Alawi got the bronze medal in the women’s 100 metres hurdles after clocking the race in 15.61 seconds. Hibaa al Asmi won silver for Oman in the javelin competitions after she registered a mark of 40.67 metres. Young sprinter Al Mulham bin Darwish al Balushi won the first gold medal for Oman in the men’s 100 metres sprint in 10.25 seconds. Azza al Yaarubi won the silver medal in the women’s 100 metres after she clocked 12.01 seconds.
