MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman is witnessing a noticeable increase in vehicle fires during the summer season, leading to significant human and material losses.
According to the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority, these incidents can be prevented by following regular maintenance procedures and adhering to safety guidelines.
Fuel and oil leaks from the tank or pipes are among the primary causes of vehicle fires. These leaks can be extremely dangerous as friction or sparks from electrical wires can easily ignite the leaked fuel, leading to a fire. Increased pressure on internal engine parts also poses a significant risk.
Excessive loads and a lack of engine maintenance can cause high temperatures, which can result in fires.
Additionally, installing parts that do not meet safety specifications further increases the risk of vehicle fires. Non-compliant parts may not function properly under stress, leading to hazardous conditions.
High summer temperatures exacerbate the situation by affecting plastic components inside the vehicle. The intense heat can cause these components to deteriorate, increasing the likelihood of fires. Another critical factor is smoking inside the vehicle. Handling flammable materials or smoking can easily lead to fires, especially if proper precautions are not taken.
Moreover, traffic accidents contribute significantly to the increased risk of vehicle fires, as collisions can cause fuel leaks or electrical malfunctions.
To mitigate these risks, it is essential to follow specific safety measures. Regular vehicle inspections are crucial. Inspecting the vehicle daily and ensuring the safety of its parts before operating it can prevent many potential issues. Engine maintenance and the replacement of damaged parts with new, high-quality ones are also vital. Regular maintenance ensures that the engine functions correctly and reduces the risk of fires.
Avoiding smoking inside the vehicle is another important precaution. Cigarette butts should be extinguished safely to prevent any chance of ignition. Parking the vehicle in safe places, particularly away from high-temperature areas, is also essential. High temperatures can exacerbate existing issues and increase the risk of fires. Additionally, never leaving children alone inside the vehicle is critical to prevent accidents and ensure their safety.
Ensuring the presence of a fire extinguisher in the vehicle is another crucial safety measure. It is important not only to have a fire extinguisher but also to know how to use it effectively in case of an emergency.
The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority urges citizens and residents to take these preventive measures seriously. By following these guidelines, individuals can avoid vehicle fires and ensure their safety and the safety of their property. It is through collective effort and adherence to safety protocols that the risks associated with vehicle fires can be minimised, especially during the hot summer months.
