Muscat: The official meteorology department of Oman has issued a weather alert for the upcoming weekend, warning of a significant rise in temperatures across the country. The surge in temperature is attributed to the activity of north-westerly winds expected to prevail from Thursday through Saturday (May 23-25).
According to a statement from the weather agency, the north-westerly winds will impact several governorates, including Buraimi, Al-Dhahirah, North and South Al-Batinah, Muscat, Al-Dakhiliyah, Al-Wusta, and Dhofar.
The statement highlighted that these winds would not only bring a substantial increase in temperatures, potentially exceeding the mid-40s in some regions but would also cause dust storms, reducing horizontal visibility at times.
“The north-westerly wind activity on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday will lead to dust rises and occasional decreases in horizontal visibility. Additionally, a rise in temperatures may exceed the mid-40s in some areas,” the statement read.
In the last 24 hours, Hamra ad Duru recorded the highest temperature at a scorching 44.7ºC, closely followed by Fahud with 44.6ºC. In stark contrast, Saiq station in Jabal Akhdar registered the lowest temperature at 20.1ºC, with Dhalkut not far behind at 22.4ºC.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions to cope with the extreme heat and reduced visibility caused by the dust storms. The meteorology department continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as needed.
