Oman hosts UN tourism meeting and ‘Investment in Tourism’ conference

MUSCAT: Oman, represented by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, will host the 50th meeting of the Regional Commission for the Middle East of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and the ‘Investment in Tourism conference today, Wednesday, at the Al Bustan Palace Hotel. The event will last for two days.


The opening ceremony of the conference will be under the auspices of HH Sayyid Taimur bin Asaad al Said, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Central Bank of Oman.


Salim bin Mohammed al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, stated that hosting this meeting and conference is an opportunity to promote Oman's tourism assets and products. It reflects the significance of Oman's tourism sector in the Middle East and worldwide, as Oman has become a promising destination due to its diverse tourism offerings.


He added that this event would enhance the promotion of Oman as a destination for international meetings and conferences and highlight its efforts to develop the tourism sector, in addition to exchanging expertise and knowledge in this field.


The selection of Oman to host this meeting reflects the organisers' appreciation of its continuous efforts in developing the tourism sector, aligning with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040. The contribution of tourism to the GDP has risen to 2.4 per cent, with ongoing investments in tourism projects.


Meanwhile, the conference is titled ‘Investment in Tourism: Opportunities and Challenges of Sustainable Financing.’ Al Mahrouqi said the conference will address the challenges and opportunities related to sustainably financing the tourism sector to raise awareness about the importance of directing funds towards tourism projects that contribute to economic and social growth sustainably. Additionally, it will explore new innovations and solutions in tourism financing and enhance cooperation between the public and private sectors to achieve sustainable development goals in the tourism sector. — ONA
