Oman clinch first Badminton Championship

Oman club’s duo Akram al Haji and Toshar Kumar defeated Bausher’s pair, Khalil al Darmaki and Mashiri Fashorsi 2-0 (21-18, 23-21) to snatch the title of Men’s double event of the inaugural edition of Oman Club Badminton Championship on Saturday night. The winners defeated Al Amerat’s dup comprised from Mohammed Ghloum and Rangit Kumar in the semis. Oman club players claim the trophy after showed an outstanding performance.


The three days Championship, organised under supervision of Oman Racket Sports Committee (ORSC), concluded on Saturday at the AMM Sports Arena in Ghala under the auspices of Abdullah bin Khamis al Kindi, member of the State Council, in presence of Dr Abdulrahim bin Musallam al Droushi, Chairman of ORSC, dignitaries and officials from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth.


At Men’s single competitions, Masirah club player Salim al Maqbali managed to lift the title after he edged Sultan al Shibani from Al Kamil W'al Wafi club with score of 2-0 (21-16, 21-10). Al Maqbali impressed in local clubs tournament as he beat Mohammed al Rasbi in the semis 2-0 before defeating Akram al Haji in the quarters.


In U-15 singles boys event, the potential player Zaid al Hinai from Masirah club bagged the gold medal as he managed to register a 2-0 win over his opponent Abdulaziz al Hinai from Masirah club 21-16 and 21-15.

Following the completion of the final match of senior double event, the chief guest delivered the awards to the top winners and sponsors who have been involved in the championship. Dr Abdullah bin Khamis al Kindi, a member of the State Council, affirmed that the tournament was successful as 12 clubs took part in the inaugural edition event. “ It is very special tournament and it is the first of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman at the level of domestic sports clubs. Thanks to ORSC for their hard efforts despite its recent establishment since July last year. These kind of events are an ideal opportunity for emerging talents to develop and refine their skills and artistic experiences.” he ended


As many as 12 clubs representing five governorates, including: Al Amerat, Al Kamil W’al Wafi, Bausher, Oman, Seeb, Al Shabab, Sohar, Majees, Salalah, Masirah, Qurayat and Ibri clubs took part in the Oman Club Badminton Championship which registered thrilling competitions. The competition included 31 players in the general single category, divided into eight groups. In the general doubles category, there were 19 teams divided into four groups, while 17 players took part in the under 15 years category and divided into four groups.


Abdulrahim bin Musallam al Droushi, Chairman of ORSC, said. “Participation of 12 clubs is record-breaking and has exceeded all our initial expectations set before the tournament commenced. This high level of participation reflects sincere interest among clubs in promoting this sport. With this interest, there are future plans to establish training centres within clubs. The tournament played effective role in developing local staff and domestic referees and the enhancement of organisational skills among local talents who supervised the event,” he finished


Iran’s Seyed Omid Moghadaszadeh was appointed as general referee and assisted by Oman’s referee Ahmed al Mafraji accompanied with eight referees including four from Oman namely Hamed al Harrasi, Shaikhan al Abri, Haitham al Shibli and Mohammed al Wardi besides 12 line umpire.

"The quality of the Oman Badminton Club Tournament was excellent. This event promises that there are many talented badminton players in Oman, which can lead to the advancement of this sport in the country,” Omid Moghadaszadeh said.


“ I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the ORSC, especially Dr Abdulrahim al Droushi, for organising this event so well and for giving me the opportunity to serve as Referee." He concluded.
