MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman celebrated International Museum Day on Saturday, aimed at underlining the importance of such dynamic institutions that promote learning, discovery, cultural awareness and understanding.

It may be noted that 11 government museums received 605,440 visitors in 2023, compared to 110,690 visitors by 19 private heritage houses and museums.

The total number of visitors to museums at the Natural History Museum in 2023 was 16,957, followed by 10,790 visitors to Fateh Al-Khair Center in Sur and Museum of the Land of Frankincense (86,79) during the same period.

International Museum Day is a global platform for enhancing the role of museums in cultural exchange and development. Museums around the world join forces to organise events, exhibitions and educational programmes centred around this topic, emphasising the effective and valuable participation of museums in society.

Since the beginning of the Blessed Renaissance, the Sultanate of Oman has focused on the importance of promoting museums, which resulted in the presence of several archaeological missions in various sites, to uncover the most important archaeological collections in the Sultanate of Oman.

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, represented by the General Directorate of Museums, is working on several projects related to the development of the museums, including upgrading the facilities at the Museum of the Land of Frankincense to keep pace with the major updates in the field of museums, including introducing new interactive display and security system.

The Ministry is also working on implementing a project to establish museum exhibition halls in several castles and forts to introduce visitors to the historical and archaeological treasures, in addition to supporting museums and private heritage houses that face some operational challenges.

The Suhar Castle Museum rehabilitation project is one of the most prominent development projects undertaken to highlight the history of the city of Suhar, its historical landmarks and its cultural relations with the world.
