MUSCAT: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) marked a significant milestone in Oman’s aviation sector with the commencement of commercial operations on the new southern runway on Thursday at Muscat International Airport. The upgrade aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations, promising to bolster international air traffic and elevate the airport's operational standards.
The southern runway, extending 4 kilometers in length and 45 meters in width, is designed to accommodate all types of aircraft, including the Airbus A380. This modernised runway introduces several advanced features that enhance airport services, such as reduced noise levels in surrounding areas, increased speed and flexibility in take-off and landing operations, and improved energy efficiency through the use of LED lighting.
The refurbishment project, which began in mid-May 2022, was executed in three comprehensive phases. The first phase involved resurfacing the runway with fresh tarmac and integrating it with nine new taxiways on the northern side and seven lanes on the southern side, along with the construction of new service roads connecting various airport facilities.
The second phase focused on resetting automated landing system devices and meteorological equipment essential for aircraft landing in emergency conditions. Additionally, ground lighting for navigation on the airport apron was installed. The final phase entailed rigorous testing of the new systems in coordination with airport operators and service providers, a crucial step for obtaining the runway's operational licence from the Civil Aviation Authority.
Aimen al Hosni, CEO of Oman Airports Management Company, expressed his enthusiasm about the project's completion. “This significant milestone marks the completion of the refurbishment that began in 2022, with the runway now meeting the highest international standards. The original southern runway, in operation since the airport's opening in 1973 as Seeb Airport, served for over 31 years before this modern upgrade. Today, as we saw the first aircraft take off smoothly from this advanced runway capable of accommodating even the Airbus A380, we celebrate the enhanced operational capabilities and reduced noise impact on nearby communities, paving the way for a sustainable future in airport operations.”
The advanced southern runway is a pivotal development for Muscat International Airport, significantly enhancing its capacity to handle increased air traffic. It promises to streamline take-off and landing operations, offering higher speed and flexibility, which are crucial for maintaining efficient airport operations. Moreover, the runway's ability to accommodate large aircraft like the Airbus A380 positions Muscat International Airport as a competitive hub in the region, capable of attracting more international airlines and passengers.
In addition to operational improvements, the runway's design emphasizes sustainability. The implementation of LED lighting systems reduces energy consumption, aligning with global trends towards greener, more eco-friendly airport operations. The reduction in noise levels also addresses environmental concerns, ensuring that the airport's expansion does not negatively impact nearby residential areas.
The successful launch of the southern runway is expected to have a ripple effect on Oman’s aviation industry, stimulating economic growth and enhancing the country’s connectivity with the rest of the world. With the upgraded infrastructure, Muscat International Airport is well-positioned to support Oman’s tourism sector, attract international business travelers, and serve as a strategic transit point for global air traffic.
