Commercial operation of the southern runway at Muscat International Airport begins

Muscat: The Civil Aviation Authority ON Thursday began commercial operation of the southern runway at Muscat International Airport. With the aim of enhancing international and local air traffic at the airport, and contributing to multiple take-off and landing paths in accordance with the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations.


The southern runway accommodates all aircraft, including Airbus A380 aircraft, and extends 4 kilometers in length and 45 meters in width, and uses the latest control devices. By lighting the runway in line with developments in the field of aviation industry, in addition to the possibility of achieving the lowest noise rates in the areas surrounding the airport. The rehabilitation work of the runway began in mid-May 2022, as part of the first phase of the work of completing its covering with asphalt and connecting it to nine new taxiways on the northern side and seven Lanes on the southern side of the runway, and a number of new service roads linking the airport facilities.


The second phase included resetting the current automated landing system devices and meteorological devices, which are used to land aircraft in emergency circumstances, in addition to installing ground lighting for navigation on the airport apron and the accompanying tests during it. Mid-January 2024. The final phase of the work was the final technical and operational tests of the new devices in coordination with airport operators and other service providers, which is one of the requirements for licensing the runway by the Authority.
