NEW YORK: The Sultanate of Oman has said that the termination of the Middle East region’s conflicts could only be achieved through the long-overdue establishment of the Palestinian state and by granting it full membership in the United Nations.

A statement to this effect was delivered before the UN General Assembly’s 10th emergency special session.

In Oman’s speech at the resumed UN session, Sayyid Ahmed bin Hamoud al Busaidy, member of the Sultanate of Oman’s permanent delegation to the United Nations in New York, described the setting up of the Palestinian State as "a strategic necessity for the next stage of UN action and a global demand supported by the international community”. In its speech, Oman urged the Security Council to reconsider granting the State of Palestine full membership in the United Nations. Oman asserted that "rejecting such a request does not serve security and peace in the Middle East or the world at large”.

It added that failure to grant the State of Palestine full UN membership "damages the credibility of the Security Council due to the application of double standards when it comes to the Palestinian cause”.

Oman welcomed the UN General Assembly members' vote, by an overwhelming majority, in support for the albeit vetoed resolution on the the State of Palestine's right to obtain full membership in the United Nations.

Oman also expressed deep concern over the Israeli occupation forces’ persistent military escalation, war crimes and genocide carried out with impunity against unarmed civilians in the Gaza Strip and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories.

Oman added its voice to statements made by four countries representing four international groups supporting the State of Palestine's legitimate demand to obtain full membership in the United Nations, like the rest of the countries of the world. The statements were made by the delegation of the United Arab Emirates (on behalf of the Arab Group), the delegation of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) and the delegation of the Republic of Uganda (on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement), all of which affirmed the international community’s support for the State of Palestine’s demand. — ONA
