Truck driver under probe in Liwa accident

In a bizarre accident due to the reckless action of a driver, a truck collided with 11 vehicles resulting in three deaths, including two citizens and an expatriate.


According to the Royal Oman Police (ROP), 15 people were injured in the incident that took place in the Wilayat of Liwa as the truck driver drove in the opposite direction of traffic. The injured were admitted to Sohar Hospital.


Brig Abdullah bin Hamad al Farsi, Al Batinah North Governorate Police Chief, said: “The driver is being tested for physical and psychological conditions. The investigation is on to determine the cause of the incident. He has not been under the influence of alcohol, but once the data is verified, a report will be prepared and sent to the competent authorities.”


One eyewitness said: “The driver traveled a long distance in the opposite direction of the traffic. What if the accident occurred at peak time on a more busy street? The disaster and consequences could have been greater.


The expatriate who died in the accident was an Indian national and an administration manager in a private company. He was on his way back from Liwa


The video of the truck moving on the highway in the opposite direction had gone viral on social media and the action of the driver was severely condemned.


The circumstances that led the truck driver to get into the opposite carriageway are still not known.
