MUSCAT: The Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) on Sunday announced the seven research papers winners of the Royal Grant for Strategic Research Projects for the year 2024.
The announcement was made as part of the university’s celebration of the 24th Annual Day held under the auspices of Dr Khamis bin Saif al Jabri, Chairman of Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit.
Among the winners were a research titled ‘Olives: An Innovation in Value-Added and Production Augmentation in the Sultanate of Oman’ by Professor Dr Rashid bin Abdullah al Yahyai from the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences, and the research titled ‘The Ecology of Invasion and Management of Parthenium Plants in the Sultanate of Oman’ by Dr Mohammad Farouk from the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences.
The other winning researches are: ‘Removing and reducing the level of carbon dioxide by converting it into useful final products using photocatalysts and sustainable renewable solar energy in the Sultanate of Oman’ by Professor Dr Renraj Selvaraj from the College of Science, and ‘Technical and economic evaluation of low-energy and flexible air-conditioning systems for the construction sector in hot climates in the Sultanate of Oman’ by Dr Saleh bin Nasser al Saadi from the College of Engineering.
The research ‘Estimation, classification, and risk assessment of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants: different technologies in the Sultanate of Oman’ conducted by Dr Zainab Yauri from the College of Engineering.
The research ‘Maximising the cooling efficiency of buildings in the Sultanate of Oman using effective and strategic methods to reduce the cost of energy and its sustainability in building systems’, conducted by Dr Mohammad Abdulqayyum from the College of Engineering.
The research titled ‘Green gold: designing effective catalytic systems to convert carbon dioxide into polycarbonates or high-value organic carbonates’, conducted by Dr Mohammad bin Zahir al Abri from the Nanotechnology Research Center.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor Dr Amer bin Saif al Hinai, Vice-President of the University for Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research at the university, said: "The international conference and exhibition for scientific research and innovation accompanying University Day comes within the framework of the university’s endeavour to advance scientific research and innovation and enhance their pivotal roles in supporting economic and digital transformation and the strategic goals associated with countries’ visions to achieve important associated economic and social benefits, most notably raising global economic competitiveness and enhancing societal well-being.
He added that the conference seeks to raise the university’s standing in global scientific circles, in light of the Royal interest of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and his continuous support for education, scientific research and innovation.
He stressed that Sultan Qaboos University is moving forward with confident steps and unwavering determination to advance scientific research, believing that it is a profitable investment that leads to sustainable development based on solid foundations that meet the needs and aspirations of society and provide it with generations of young people armed with knowledge and skills that enable building a knowledge society and competing in markets.
He stated that the conference will see participation of speakers, scholars, thinkers and researchers from the Sultanate of Oman and abroad who present knowledge, thought and experiences in the various themes of the conference in discussion sessions that highlight the importance of scientific research and innovation and their status as essential elements in global economic competitiveness in the 21st century. They support social and economic development in all fields to come up with recommendations that develop appropriate practical solutions to the challenges associated with the economic and digital transformation of Omani society and other societies around the world. — ONA
