MUSCAT: French multinational utility EDF has described the award of a land block for a green hydrogen project in the Sultanate of Oman as a “game-changer” for the energy company.

“This project is a game-changer for us in the hydrogen sector, as well as for Oman and the entire Middle East region,” said Luc Koechlin, CEO Middle East of EDF.

Speaking to journalists soon after signing the project agreements with Hydrom – the orchestrator of the green hydrogen industry in Oman, Koechlin added: “Hydrom is truly taking a leadership role in the hydrogen sector on a global scale.”

EDF is a government-owned utility company active in the entire value chain, from generation to distribution, for all kinds of low-carbon energy technologies.

On Tuesday, the consortium of EDF Group, J-POWER and Yamna was awarded the mandate to develop a hydrogen project in Dhofar Governorate. “This consortium has been awarded a wonderful piece of land in Salalah to build a massive 4.5-gigawatt (GW) wind and solar project. For reference, 4.5 GW is roughly equivalent to the output of four nuclear power plants,” said Koechlin.

The project, the official explained, will include a huge 2.5 GW electrolyzer, which will produce hydrogen. “This hydrogen will then be transformed into ammonia, with an expected output of 1 million tonnes of ammonia per year,” he added.
