The SABIS STARS international competition, which is held every two years and brings together students from SABIS schools from all over the world, started at The Choueifat International School in Muscat on Friday.
The competition lasts for two days, during which students compete in various academic and cultural fields to showcase their talents and creativity.
The event witnessed the wide participation of around 500 students representing 36 schools from various countries, including Brazil, the United States, Germany, Kenya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, China, and others, reflecting the cultural and creative diversity of the participants.
The activities in which students compete include several categories, including advertising, where teams are asked to prepare a marketing campaign including the brand name, a short video, and a billboard. These are evaluated by the judging committee the following day. There's also a category for poetry recitation where participants are allowed to perform two poems, one in Arabic and the other in English. One contestant per school for each category.
In creative writing competition, students are given a specific topic in the form of a phrase, quote, or image, and they write a creative piece about it within 3 hours. Additionally, there's a debate category where teams compete on a topic in English, with evaluation based on the accuracy of information and persuasive ability within a set time frame. Another category is the science exhibition where teams from each school present educational projects in a chosen specialty, accompanied by a distinctive display board.
In the oratory category, one contestant from each school delivers a 3 to 4-minute speech in English without using a microphone. The art category comprises two contestants per school who are given a full day to complete an artistic piece on a predetermined topic set by the organizing committee. In photography, each contestant takes a picture on a predetermined topic within a specified time frame to submit their best image for the competition.
The "Our World, Our Concerns" category requires students to plan, execute, and document an awareness campaign within the school community explaining a problem and offering solutions. Students will take on roles related to future jobs in the age of robots and artificial intelligence, the benefits of renewable energy, carbon dioxide processing in the atmosphere, and the role of youth and education in climate action.
In singing, each contestant performs a song of their choice, with their performance evaluated by the judging committee based on specific criteria.
