After a drought that lasted more than five years, residents of the village of Al Sawaqim in the Wilayat of Qurayat are glad that their wells and aflaj are filled with water. For more than two days, the water canals have been overflowing with pure water, which provides water to the agricultural oases located along Wadi Al Sumair. The amount of water of this wadi ends in Wadi Majlas which is one of the largest wadis in the Wilayat of Qurayat.
The village of Al Sawaqim is surrounded by mountains from the north and south sides, and its residents are famous for practicing agriculture. These farms produce dozens of local products, the most important of which are dates, mangoes, lemons, and various types of vegetables.
“In agricultural production, we depend on groundwater and aflaj water. Therefore, today we feel very happy after the heavy rain. We are certain that this year's harvest season will be good," an Omani resident told the Observer.
Most agricultural products are marketed in local markets. Among the most important of these markets is the Qurayat Central Market, which is about 20 km from the village of Al Sawaqim.
Some agricultural products are also marketed in Muttrah Souq, which is witnessing an increasing demand for local agricultural products.
The continuity of water flow in this area also feeds the areas located to the east of this village, such as Al Hajir and Al Maseelah. These areas have depended on agricultural and pastoral production since ancient times.
Heavy rains in this region will also help natural resources flourish. Dozens of perennial trees and plants grow on the banks of this valley. Many species of wildlife also live here, including Arabian ibex, deer, and resident and migratory birds. This is in addition to other types of Omani reptiles and butterflies.
This wadi attracts dozens of tourists daily, as it provides an opportunity for recreation and exploration of the geological sites located on the mountain hills adjacent to the valley.
