MUSCAT, APRIL 7
Saeed bin Hamoud al Maawali, Oman’s Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, recently shared valuable insights into the country's infrastructure projects and initiatives during an interview with Radio Muscat. His discussion shed light on the significant strides being made to enhance Oman's transportation and communication networks, as well as to advance technology across the nation.
One of the key projects discussed was the Batinah Expressway, a crucial infrastructure development that has faced challenges such as financial difficulties and delays due to issues with contractor coordination and infrastructure variations. Despite these setbacks, Al Maawali highlighted ongoing negotiations with contractors aimed at addressing these challenges and ensuring the successful completion of the project.
Another important project highlighted during the interview was the Barka-Suhar Road, which plays a vital role in the economic development of the region. Efforts are being done to resolve outstanding issues and accelerate the progress of the project to ensure its timely completion.
In addition to specific projects, the interview also delved into the Ministry's initiatives to streamline contracting processes and reduce the impact of change orders in projects exceeding RO 19 million. By assigning more responsibility to contractors for design, coordination, and execution, the Ministry aims to ensure smoother project delivery and minimise disruptions. The approach reflects a shift towards more efficient project management practices and highlights the Ministry's commitment to achieving high-quality results that align with the country's evolving needs.
Al Maawali also emphasised the Ministry's dedication to enhancing infrastructure projects and promoting innovation in the transportation and communication sectors. Collaboration with contractors and consultants plays a crucial role in ensuring efficient project execution and delivering results that meet the growing demands of Oman's evolving landscape.
Additionally, the Ministry has been collaborating with port authorities to optimise the utilization of smaller ports and create a seamless logistics network that facilitates smoother transportation of goods and services. By integrating ports with airports and border crossings, Oman seeks to enhance trade, promote economic growth, and solidify its position as a regional logistics hub. This, according to Al Maawali, underscores the Ministry's commitment to enhancing connectivity and driving economic opportunities for businesses operating in Oman.
Efforts to modernise transportation facilities, such as revamping the logistics center in Salalah and enhancing operations at the Suwaiq port, emphasises the Ministry's dedication to meeting the evolving needs of businesses and consumers. These initiatives are crucial for ensuring the smooth flow of goods and services across the country and supporting Oman's economic growth trajectory.
In the communications and information technology sectors, Al Maawali said the Ministry has been actively promoting innovation and technology adoption through strategic collaborations with industry players and investments in digital infrastructure. Initiatives like the establishment of a logistics center and the development of a comprehensive logistics system are aimed at leveraging technology to optimize operations, improve efficiency, and enhance the overall customer experience.
