SALALAH: A significant uptick in commercial activity is transforming Dhofar Governorate into a bustling hub as families stock up on essentials for the upcoming Eid al Fitr celebrations. Shop windows across Salalah and other towns brim with special offers and discounts, invigorating the consumer scene.

Recognising this surge in activity, the Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has intensified its oversight efforts to ensure price stability, product quality and consumer safety. Dedicated teams of legal officers and inspectors are conducting comprehensive inspections across commercial establishments. A key focus is verifying the legitimacy of promotional offers and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.

The CPA maintains its vigilance throughout the year, with a particular emphasis on peak seasons like Ramadhan and back-to-school. Their well-defined action plan, involving extended inspection hours during the holy month, underscores their commitment to market stability and adherence to the Consumer Protection Law. The consumer watchdog emphasises the importance of collaboration between all stakeholders — consumers, vendors, and regulatory bodies — in maintaining a thriving marketplace.

Local businesses are committed to offering competitive promotions while upholding product quality. Mohammed Saeed, a local trader, exemplifies this approach. "We are committed to offering special promotions and discounts to attract customers and encourage purchases, all while prioritising the quality and safety of our products," he remarked.

Consumers like Aisha bint Salim, are adopting mindful shopping practices. “I create a specific list of necessities to ensure I don't make impulse purchases," she said.

Another consumer, Salem bin Ali, expressed his appreciation for the CPA's efforts. "I value the Consumer Protection Authority's role in monitoring the markets, safeguarding consumer rights and facilitating shopping at fair prices," he said.

While Dhofar's commercial vibrancy invigorates the local economy and fosters job opportunities, the market is experiencing a shift in consumer behaviour compared to pre-pandemic times.

Tailors like Sushan Kumar report a rise in raw material costs, leading to an increase in clothing prices. Moftah al Din, a salesman, anticipates a surge in demand, particularly for women's products closer to Eid, but expresses concerns about lingering pandemic-induced price hikes.

These insights reveal an evolving shopping landscape. Consumer spending habits might remain cautious due to the pandemic's lingering effects, even as Ramadhan and Eid traditionally stimulate commercial activity. Rising costs put pressure on both businesses and shoppers, creating a delicate balance between consumer confidence and market stability.

The CPA's proactive approach provides a crucial safeguard during this vibrant period. Their commitment to a fair and thriving marketplace for all resonates with the general population.
