Muscat: Road accidents dropped by 35 percent while related deaths and injuries fell by 46 percent and 33 percent, respectively, according to the Directorate-General of Traffic in the first ten days of the holy month of Ramadhan compared to the same period last year.
Brigadier Engineer Ali bin Sulayem al Falahi, Director-General of Traffic, stressed the importance of concerted efforts of all the society members to achieve the highest level of road safety and ensure the smooth flow of traffic during this holy month of Ramadan as road safety is a shared responsibility. He noted that the congestion during the month of Ramadhan is attributed to many factors including increased shopping activities and family and friends gatherings for Iftar.
Among the most prominent faulty behaviours that were observed over the first ten days of the holy month of Ramadhan include speeding, reckless driving, distracted driving such as using the phone while driving, wrong overtaking and entering a road in a dangerous way, the official said.
The Director-General of Traffic explained that trucks have been banned on the main roads in Muscat Governorate and the Al Dakhiliyah Road from the Muscat Governorate to the Bidbid Bridge, the Al Batinah road from Muscat Governorate to the Wilayat of Shinas from 6:30 am to 9:30 and from 12 noon to 4 pm from Sunday to Thursday throughout the month of Ramadan to prevent traffic jams and reduce road accidents.
