OCCI debates private sector and labour market issues

Muscat: The Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) held its first Ramadhan Night under the title ‘Dialogue Between the Three Production Parties to Regulate the Labour Market’, on Monday.


The event was held under the auspices of Sayyid Saud bin Hilal al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat.


Economic experts and specialists discussed the challenges and difficulties facing the private sector with regard to the labour market in the Sultanate of Oman and ways to stabilize it.


Faisal bin Abdullah al Rawas, Chairman, OCCI Board of Directors, said that regulating the labour market is a key to improving the business environment and empowering the private sector. He added that the event brought together representatives from the three production parties: the government represented by the Ministry of Labour, workers represented by the General Federation of the Sultanate of Oman Workers as well as the OCCI.


He added that the Ramadhan Night discussed the changes in the Omani Labour Law and the obligations and rights of both employers and workers. He added that the event is dedicated to debating challenges and difficulties facing private sector institutions with regard to the labour market and the role of social dialogue in achieving stability in the labour market.

Also attendant at the event were Qais Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, Shaikh Nasr bin Amer al Hosani, Labour Under-secretary at the Ministry of Labour and Nabhan bin Ahmed al Battashi, Chairman of the General Federation of the Sultanate of Oman Workers.


The participants reviewed the changes to the Omani Labour Law and the laws and regulations of the Social Protection Fund compared to former regulations and laws. Business owners were introduced to the obligations and rights set forth by the law.


A number of challenges and developments facing labour rights in the modern age were also discussed including temporary work, the impact of technology on traditional jobs, the lack of balance between professional and personal life. The participants concluded that addressing these challenges requires strengthening national labour legislation, improving vocational training to enhance worker skills, and encouraging companies to adopt sustainable working methods.


It is noteworthy that the Ramadhan Nights, organized by the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, aim to enhance the knowledge pertaining to business and economy and raise awareness of and laws and legislations governing business and labour market through discussions with economic experts and decision-makers to explore new opportunities for investment and growth. — ONA
