One feels the time has finally come, for the silent majority to speak out, and reclaim their histories, their cultures, their traditions, and indeed, their futures, from the woke pestilence that has insidiously, without mandate, assumed both our identities and our dignity, and we, the silent, let it happen.
The origins of the socio-political use of woke, a passive voice past-participle of wake, lie in the United States of America, in the 1800’s as the abolition of slavery split the nation, with Abraham Lincoln’s short-lived triumph prior to his assassination, a small, though bitterly accepted, step forward in America’s cultural awakening. The word was re-awakened as a subtle element in the mid-20th century struggle of African Americans against institutional prejudice and racial discrimination with Martin Luther-King and the Klu Klux Klan the most high-profile antagonists.
The term ‘woke,’ re-emerged as a catchphrase by its supporters, and more negatively as a pejorative by its detractors, some ten or fifteen years ago as, it would seem, millennials raised on a wave of marketing and consumerism appropriated it as their media tagline. It is touted as a rallying call for social issues and action, including white privilege (possibly), racial prejudice (again), gender (perpetually), and (so-called) systemic sexism. More recently, even those objectives have been very much subjugated by the all-consuming movements.
To prioritise one’s dignity or offence over another is not the way social change should happen, yet here we are, in a world where to say one wants to be something else, something it’s not, is not a genuine sociological reality. It is surely not a concept we should be wasting our time and energy on, let alone having our families, communities, and societies assaulted so heinously. None of us can be something we are not simply by saying so!
I understand that we are not all the same, in fact I celebrate it, but there is a limit! Some of these social anarchists, for example, are saying they want to identify as men when they are women, or men identifying as women, as either, neither, or both, or whatever. None of these are sustainable perspectives to take when thought through practically, and the chinks in the woke armour must surely be widening.
We have seen several cases of criminals, only after they are caught, identifying as women, to get access to female companionship when they are incarcerated. We have seen males in female changing facilities, and females in male changing rooms, enough to make ordinary, run-of-the-mill, everyday people hesitant about using public conveniences, gymnasium changing facilities, and the like.
And please don’t get me started about males competing in female sports events simply because they identify otherwise. Again, simply, I don’t believe these are genuine transitions. Without exception, these are male athletes and participants who have tried and failed against their peers and have now found a way in which they can get on the podium.
The image widely circulated on ‘some’ media last week of one such athlete, a basketballer, throwing a young female to the floor as they tussled for the ball only looked to me like bullying! And why? For an ego trip that must surely carry the stench of dishonesty, and all for a moment of fame, or more accurately, as a moment of shame.
We know, for example, that most of us can tell the difference between a sheep and a wolf, and if a sheep wants to dress up as a wolf (though only the sheep knows why), then they take the consequences, and if the woodsman lops their head off, he may well say “Ooooops!” But it’s not his fault, is it?
This folly has been given more time, space, and attention than it deserves. Let’s ‘woke’ up, and ‘woke’ out. Let’s cancel this scourge... We sure don’t need it!
