THAMRAIT: Farmers in the Najd region of the Dhofar Governorate began harvesting wheat for the 2023/2024 season, under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MoAFWR).

The cultivated area of wheat reached about 7,200 acres with a growth rate estimated at 29 per cent. The ministry is expecting an output of 10,000 tonnes. Eng Said bin Musallam al Kathiri, Director of the Department of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources in Thamrait, said: The cultivated area this year in the Najd region is about 7,200 acres, distributed among 82 farms. The ministry has deployed at least 6 harvesters free of cost to support farmers."

Al Kathiri stressed the importance of the wheat crop in the food security of Oman. The ministry is keen to increase the acreage of wheat across Oman. Najd region is one of the promising areas for wheat cultivation due the presence of large farms and groundwater.
