The latest radar images indicate Muscat is expected to receive rains on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
“There are certain factors why we are seeing the amount of rainfall in certain areas. There is a band of cloud in the affected areas especially from Al Hajar Mountains and the southern part of Al Dhahirah, Al Buraimi, Al Dakhiliyah and other governorates,” said the meteorologist at the Civil Aviation Authority.
Abdullah bin Rashid al Khaduri, Director-General of Meteorology at the Civil Aviation Authority, said, “The Civil Aviation Authority, represented by the National Multi Hazard Early Warning Centre, continues to follow up on all updates and developments in this weather condition.”
He said that there is a delay in the rainfall, which was expected to begin on Saturday morning, stressing that updates to numerical models and analysis still indicate that the amount of rain expected could range from 30 to 150 mm, as it will lead to the flow of wadis.
He said that they are expecting rains to head to Muscat late night on Saturday and Sunday morning.
At present Al Buraimi is experiencing severe thunderstorms, as well as parts of Musandam and southern part of Al Dhahirah and Al Dakhiliyah. The wind will continue to be strong mainly southeasterly and the coast of the Sea of Oman will be northeasterly - moderate to fresh.
The National Emergency Management Committee and its subcommittees in the governorates are closely monitoring the developments of the weather condition currently affecting the Sultanate of Oman.
Col Zayed bin Hamad al Junaibi, Head of the National Centre for Emergency Management, said that the National Emergency Management Committee is continuously following up the weather system the effect of which has already begun in some governorates. The committee and its subcommittees are also following up on developments in the situation and dealing with its effects.
Hamoud bin Mohammed al Mandhari, coordinator of the relief and shelter sector at the National Emergency Management Committee, said that 203 centres were set up in the governorates that are expected to receive extremely heavy rain of which 9 centres have been activated, and 138 citizens and residents have been evacuated.
Meanwhile, studies in vocational colleges will be suspended in the governorates of Al Dhahirah, Al Buraimi, Al Batinah South, Al Batinah North, Muscat, Al Dakhiliyah, Al Sharqiyah North, and Al Sharqiyah South on Sunday due to the weather system that is currently affecting the Sultanate of Oman, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation announced on Saturday.
The ministry decided that the studies in the private higher education institutions in these governorates will be conducted online, due to the weather condition that is currently affecting the Sultanate of Oman.
The ministry said that the management of the respective institution could decide whether or not to resume classes on Monday depending on the weather condition.
The Wilayat of Adam recorded the highest amount of rain (65 mm), followed by the Wilayat of Al Qabil with 64 mm, and the Wilayat of Ibri with 60 mm on Friday and Saturday, due to the weather condition affecting some governorates of Oman.
