MUSCAT, MARCH 7
The General Assembly of Basketball held their regular meeting headed by Eng Khalfan bin Saleh al Naabi, Chairman of the Oman Basketball Association (OBA), after the legal quorum for the meeting was completed, where 8 clubs were paid annual subscription fees for 2024, namely: Dhofar, Salalah, Ahli Sidab, Al Bashayer, Oman Club, Nizwa, Seeb and Qurayat. The meeting was attended by Rashid al Maamari, the representative of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth.
The meeting began with a speech by Eng Khalfan al Naabi, in which he expressed the association’s aspiration to implement various competition programmes in order to spread and develop the game, by supporting the centres for preparing young athletes.
OBA praised the successes achieved by the young women’s team in the Gulf Women’s 3x3 Basketball Championship, as well as the participation of the youth teams in the regional and Arab championships. He also praised the success of the two championships, stressing the importance of supporting the partners and the efforts of the clubs and their solidarity in achieving the goals of the association.
Following the speech, Mohammed bin Nasser al Hasani, acting Secretary-General, presented the meeting agenda. Representatives from Oman Club, Seeb and Nizwa were then appointed to audit the minutes.
The assembly subsequently approved the minutes of the previous meeting and the administrative report outlining the association’s past activities and programmes. Additionally, they endorsed the 2024 activity schedule, the budget and the final accounts for 2023. The draft financial budget for 2024 was also approved.
A discussion then ensued on proposals submitted by clubs. Al Bashayer and Seeb clubs primarily focused on raising financial rewards for competitions, including the Super Cup, Credit Oman, the General League and the Ministry Shield.
Al Naabi confirmed conducting studies and sending proposals to the Ministry of Finance for potential financial allocation adjustments.
The assembly further approved the formation of a delegation to meet with officials from the ministry and discuss the association’s financial challenges and limitations.
Regarding proposals to support youth development centres and increase club participation in competitions, the assembly agreed to raise these points for discussion at a separate technical meeting to formulate specific recommendations.
The assembly welcomed applications for affiliation from Mirbat and Saham clubs, granting them membership after verifying they met all official requirements. The affiliation of Al Nahda club is pending further review to ensure compliance with the ministry regulations.
