New initiative to regulate voluntary work in Oman: MoSD

Muscat: The Ministry of Social Development held on Thursday its annual media briefing, showcasing key achievements, performance indicators, plans, aspirations, and forthcoming initiatives across its various service sectors.


During the event, Dr. Laila bint Ahmed Al Najjar, Minister of MoSD, emphasized the Ministry's commitment to delivering effective services to its target groups through robust programmes and projects.


In her review, she said that a total of 82,215 cases of social security beneficiaries and low-income individuals received various forms of assistance in 2023, including emergency, cash, in-kind, temporary, and special support during disasters and emergencies.


The total financial assistance disbursed amounted to RO 7,897,480 million.


Dr. Al Najjar further said as many as 79,597 social security beneficiaries have availed financial assistance at the end of 2023, worth RO 122,178,206 million.


According to MoSD, a total of 2,202 beggars were arrested in 2023 after the Ministry carried out several campaigns aimed to combat begging in the Sultanate of Oman.


The ministry has also made a remarkable stride in reducing bullying among children and violence against women thought various media drives.


Emphasizing the importance of empowerment and training programmes in enabling families to achieve self-reliance and improve their living standards, the Minister noted that 3,440 individuals benefitted from opportunities for financing, technical and vocational training, and on-the-job training during 2023.


Meanwhile, the minister said there is a plan to roll out a new initiative named “Tasmu” which targets 50 women who hold supervisory positions in the government and private sectors and to set a special Omani platform for volunteers to regulate the voluntary work in the Sultanate of Oman.


The minister reiterated the Ministry's keenness to pursue its ambitious plans and initiatives aimed at achieving sustainable social development and strengthening its role in serving the community.
