Crafting a greener, more inclusive future

As someone working in the green transition space, I’ve spent years examining the intersection of economic growth, inclusivity, and environmental stewardship. Oman Vision 2040 was one that I was involved in and, in my opinion, serves as a compelling blueprint for the future, embodying ambitious strategies for economic diversification and sustainability. This vision, deeply rooted in inclusivity, aims to empower all segments of society, particularly women and marginalised communities, setting a remarkable precedent for global development strategies.

In my exploration of Oman’s strategic plan, it’s evident that key sectors such as fisheries, tourism, logistics, manufacturing, and green energy are pivotal. Yet, it’s the emphasis on technology as the linchpin for achieving economic goals that truly signifies Oman’s forward-thinking approach. For instance, advancements in the fisheries sector have not only increased production but have done so in a manner that conserves marine biodiversity, showcasing a commitment to sustainable practices that can serve as a model worldwide.

Digital platforms in tourism are empowering women entrepreneurs, creating new avenues for business, and contributing to Oman’s broader economic objectives. This highlights a significant shift towards leveraging technology for inclusive growth, a principle I’ve long advocated for in my writing. However, the journey toward realising Oman Vision 2040 is not without hurdles. Stereotypical and generational barriers often pose significant challenges, necessitating a strategic approach to policy formulation that fosters a more inclusive environment. Oman’s response, through legislative reforms and targeted education and training programmes, exemplifies a commitment to breaking down these barriers, paving the way for a more inclusive society.

The Environment Society of Oman’s women’s empowerment programme is a prime example of how targeted initiatives, especially in rural areas, can catalyse change, fostering environmental awareness and community leadership among women. Such programmes are essential for the kind of society Oman envisions—one where inclusivity and sustainability are the bedrock of economic and social development.Through my own personal lens, Oman’s dedication to supporting women’s entrepreneurship and its focus on sustainability stand out as critical components of its vision. Initiatives that promote women’s economic participation and sustainable development practices underscore Oman’s holistic approach to growth. The country’s investment in green energy and sustainable building practices align with global sustainability goals, illustrating a commitment to environmental stewardship alongside economic development.

As the world marks International Women’s Day, Oman’s strides towards inclusive growth and women’s empowerment offer valuable insights. The nation’s approach underscores the importance of integrating inclusivity and sustainability into economic planning, principles that are increasingly recognised as essential for future development.

In sharing these observations, I hope to contribute to the dialogue on how countries can navigate the complexities of modern economic growth while ensuring that inclusivity and sustainability are at the forefront. Oman Vision 2040 provides a blueprint for achieving a more prosperous, sustainable, and inclusive future, serving as a beacon for striving to balance economic development with environmental and social responsibilities.
