The Sultanate of Oman represented by the Directorate of Public Relations and Security Information, Royal Oman Police (ROP), joined the rest in the Gulf region in celebrating Gulf Traffic Week (GCC Traffic Week) 2024 which kicked off on Sunday to spread awareness on how it can kill self and others, from Sunday. Under the theme 'Driving Without a Phone', aimed at shedding more light on the perils of using mobile phone while driving.
On the occasion, an awareness exhibition on various aspects of traffic safety to introduce the dangers of traffic accidents and their causes was opened as part of the 36th edition of the Unified GCC Traffic Week under the auspices of Engineer Khamis bin Mohammed al Shammakhi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for Transport in the presence of a number of officers of the Sultan’s Armed Forces, the Royal Oman Police and concerned government and private agencies at the ‘Mall of Oman’.
The exhibition, in which a number of government and private institutions are taking part, includes interactive screens, awareness publications, and models of devices and applications used in traffic safety, in addition to highlighting traffic statistics and highlighting the awareness efforts of traffic safety institutes in all governorates.
“The aims of the Gulf Traffic Week, jointly organised by all the Gulf countries, are to enhance the spread of traffic culture, establish proper traffic behaviour, and unify efforts towards creating a community culture covering various aspects of traffic safety, serving the vision of police leadership in achieving the desired goals,” said Colonel Saleh bin Salem al Khanjari, Director of Security Relations and Media.
In achieving this, various events, workshops and lectures are scheduled to be conducted in various governorates, besides various scheduled field visits that offer advice to road users, in addition to the regulatory aspect, and utilising various social media platforms to spread the objectives and goals of Traffic Week.
Al Khanjari said that the GCC Traffic Week will work as an opportunity to exchange information and experiences with participants, highlighting that the presence of common traffic phenomena is due to similar conditions, which makes it a shared responsibility to raise awareness, address road dangers, prepare plans and programmes, and benefit from diverse experiences in making benchmark comparisons, exchanging on the field experiences and learning from the experiences of others to be better equipped to drive safe.
Al Khanjari said that a number of governorates are part of the celebrations and have a variety of activities for the public to gain information on traffic safety.
In Al Buraimi Governorate, the Governorate Police Command, with the participation of a number of government and private agencies, organised a traffic exhibition under the patronage of Sayyid Dr Hamad bin Ahmed al Busaidy, Governor of Al Buraimi.
In Al Dhahirah Governorate, the Governorate’s Police Command organised a traffic exhibition under the patronage of Najeeb bin Ali al Rowas, Governor of Al Dhahirah and the exhibition includes various awareness-raising events and activities with the participation of a number of government and private agencies. On the sidelines of the opening of the exhibition, the chief guest honoured the participants.
In the Al Batinah North Governorate, Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah al Busaidy, Wali of Suhar, sponsored the opening of the traffic exhibition, which includes various awareness-raising events and activities with the participation of a number of government and private agencies.
In Musandam Governorate, the Governorate Police Command organised a traffic exhibition under the patronage of Sayyid Ibrahim bin Said al Busaidy, Governor of Musandam, with the participation of a number of government and private agencies and community members. In conjunction with the traffic exhibition, the Musandam Governorate Police Command set up awareness points for road users and organised many awareness lectures for school students in various states of the governorate.
