Muscat: In an impressive demonstration of intellectual skill and strategic mastery, Oman-based Candidate Master (CM) Velavaa Ragavesh has brought honour to his country India by winning the silver medal at the Commonwealth Chess Championship, which concluded on February 27 in Malaysia. This significant accomplishment not only places Velavaa on the regional chess map, but also shines a spotlight on the emerging talent from Commonwealth nations in the chess arena.
Velavaa's performance throughout the tournament was extraordinary. Facing off against some of the sharpest minds from across the Commonwealth, he achieved a commendable tie for first place, securing an impressive score of 7 out of 9 rounds. However, the tie-break favoured Nirish Kumar Siva Kumar from Malaysia, who took home the gold medal, leaving Velavaa with a well-earned silver. Their pivotal sixth-round match ended in a draw, leading to a tense tie-break decision.
Undeterred by the stiff competition, Velavaa's resolve remained steadfast. Reflecting on his experience, he shared, "I feel extremely grateful and proud to represent our country. Achieving a medal on such a prestigious stage was made possible through consistent play and regular practice. The unwavering support from our coaches, family, friends and school has been incredibly motivating."
OCC SUPPORT
He also expressed gratitude towards the Oman Chess Committee (OCC) for their role in organising regular chess tournaments, crucial for developing players' skills and competitive edge.
A ninth-grade student at Indian School Al Seeb, Velavaa has excelled not only in chess, but in his academic endeavours as well. Supported by his family, including parents Ragavesh Dhandapani and Rajyalakshmi Gopalakrishnan, and elder brother Srivishva Barath Ragavesh, he has skilfully balanced his studies with his passion for chess.
He also thanked his teachers and principal for their encouragement and support. His father's role as a faculty member at a prestigious private university in Muscat and his mother's unwavering support have been crucial to his achievements.
The young chess prodigy's recent accolades include receiving the Candidate Master (CM) title in January 2024 and securing a bronze medal at the World Amateur Chess Championship in November 2023, held in Muscat, Oman. Velavaa is determined to excel in forthcoming tournaments to enhance his rating points and ascend to the next level in his chess career, aiming to achieve these milestones before completing his school education.
With his remarkable accomplishments and backed by the support of his family, coaches and the chess community at large, Velavaa Ragavesh is on a fast track to becoming a distinguished figure in the world of chess.
