The pathway project of ‘Hujrat al shaikh,’ currently under construction in Wadi Al Maawal, is a community partnership involving the Governorate's office and the municipality of Wadi Al Maawal.
The path is surrounded by majestic palm trees and beautiful, vibrant green farms, with 50 per cent of the project completed in the initial phase.
Saud bin Saeed Al Maawali, Deputy Chairman, Municipal Council in Al Batinah South Governorate, who spoke said, “The project connects three historical sites namely Haret Hujrat Al Sheikh, one of the ancient districts of Wadi Al Maawal adorned with old houses featuring beautiful engravings and decorations designed by ancient engineers; the Safala Castle, one of the historical castles in the governorate that has received care and attention from the government by renew it ; and finally, the Bait Al Ghasham Museum, located in the village of Al Shali in the town of Afi, containing distinctive and beautiful rooms, watchtowers, large yards, wells, storage areas, and inscriptions.
One of the notable features of this walkway is its location amidst farms, with orchards and the Wadi Al Washahi falaj on either side. It experiences significant tourist traffic, especially during weekends and official holidays.
Al Maawali adds that the project will include seating areas and rest stops for enjoying the natural scenery.
There are also plans to organise an annual date festival during the summer season, showcasing the Governorate’s finest dates and attracting buyers to Wadi Al Maawal's market, known for its high-quality dates.
The proposal includes displaying these dates along the walkway.
Additionally, the path will be operational with the provision of stalls offering delicious foods, snacks, and other activities. Tourist carts will also be provided to make Wadi Al Maawal a prominent tourist destination in the Sultanate of Oman.
