Due to its many topographical characteristics, there are many tourist destinations in the Sultanate. Sulfur springs are classified as one of these destinations that attract tourists and specialists in geological sciences.
In addition, these sites are a major source of recovery from many rheumatic diseases and skin allergies.
In Ain Namah in the Wilayat of Adam, Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, sulfur springs continue to flow throughout the year. This spring is located in a topographical depression extending in the middle of the desert plain, which is about 40 km from the centre of the state, and is located along Wadi Halfeen.
Every time after heavy rains, the water flow increases, as the water covers a wide area along the valley.
Despite the distance of this location, since ancient time’s people have been visiting this unique location to heal and spend comfortable time in this spacious place surrounded by desert trees. This site is also characterised by soft sand and unique geological formations that surround the area from the east and west.
The importance of this site is not limited to recovery from the sulfurous waters and tourism. This natural oasis located in the middle of the desert attracts many rare wild animals such as wild rabbits and deer, and at the same time is considered a haven for dozens of species of resident and migratory Omani birds.
Studies indicate that sulfur water has many benefits whether used for drinking or as an external treatment used for bathing or inhaling. The reason for its importance is due to the effect of hydrogen sulfide, which is absorbed by the pores of the skin and passes through the mucous membranes of the stomach and bronchopulmonary membranes.
This water helps clean the intestines, liver, and urinary tract. It also helps lower blood sugar.
Medical research confirms the significant role of hydrogen sulfide in many biochemical reactions of the body. New data is beginning to reveal new therapeutic applications for this water. Hydrogen sulfide gas can be absorbed in several ways and can penetrate the skin and mucous membranes. Therefore, it can work at the cellular level, whether in the skin or the internal organs of the body, so the topical application of sulfur mineral water rich in hydrogen sulfide can treat internal organ disorders.
“Dozens of tourists flock to this beautiful site, especially during official holidays, and the number of tourists increases after periods of rain. There is also a group of researchers who go to this site to study its geological and physical formations”, an Omani resident said.
This site can only be reached by a 4WD because the road leading to it is not paved.
“We call on the competent authorities to study the feasibility of paving the road leading to this tourist site. A plan must also be prepared to establish some service facilities such as restrooms. Completing these requirements will facilitate the access process and double the number of visitors to this area”, he adds.
It should be noted that the Sultanate is famous for many sulfur springs, the most famous and deepest of which are the Al Kasfa springs in Rustaq which witness active tourist movement throughout the year.
