Nizwa is a sought-after tourist destination due to its historical significance, exemplified by the well-preserved Nizwa Fort, and its status as a former capital. The city offers a rich cultural experience, with traditional Omani markets, mosques, and events showcasing music and cuisine. Surrounded by the stunning Hajar Mountains, Nizwa boasts natural beauty, inviting exploration through hiking and camping. The bustling Al Nizwa Souq is a highlight for visitors, offering a diverse array of goods. Combining history, culture, natural landscapes, and vibrant markets, Nizwa provides travelers with an immersive and authentic Omani experience.
As my small family and I approached the grand wooden doors guarding the entrance to the Nizwa Souq, my gaze was immediately drawn to the spectacle before us. Classic tourist carts, adorned in opulent hues of black and red, embellished the scene, each one varying in size and exuding an air of luxury. While I had glimpsed these magnificent vehicles on social media in the past, nothing compared to witnessing them firsthand, especially in the company of my loved ones.
These iconic carts provided us with an unforgettable experience, not only imparting valuable information but also saving us precious time. Maneuvering through the alleys of Nizwa Souq and the Al Aqr village in just 30 minutes, they facilitated our exploration, particularly as I cradled my one-and-a-half-year-old daughter in my arms.
