MUSCAT: In a significant development towards the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in Oman, Dr Talal al Saadi, Director of the Under-Secretary's Office of the Ministry of Interior Oman, shared his insights at the recently concluded Oman AI Summit held at the Grand Millennium Muscat. Al Saadi underscored the need for a dedicated AI law that aligns with Oman Vision 2040 and ensures the effective and sustainable application of smart technologies.

During a panel discussion, Al Saadi emphasised that to achieve the goals outlined in Oman Vision 2040, the Omani legislators must take a series of strategic steps. These steps include clearly defining the objectives of the AI law, engaging with all relevant stakeholders, analysing existing laws for integration and coordination, establishing standards and ethics, promoting research and development, and defining the responsibilities of each party involved.

Following the summit, in a post, Al Saadi highlighted the importance of setting standards for ethical conduct and safety in the use of AI, ensuring the protection of personal data, and defining limits on its application to preserve individual rights and safety. He stressed the need for mechanisms to monitor the implementation of the law and periodically evaluate its impact.

Moreover, Al Saadi emphasised the significance of enhancing educational programmes and awareness campaigns to enable the public to understand the concept of AI and its impact on society. He also called for collaboration with other countries to share knowledge and experiences in the field of AI, as well as the creation of an investment-friendly environment to encourage investment in AI through financial incentives and facilitations.

Al Saadi further emphasised the need to integrate AI policies with information security strategies to address data security challenges. He highlighted the importance of periodic reviews and updates of the AI law to align it with technological advancements and societal needs.

The comments of Director Al Saadi came against the backdrop of the Oman AI Summit, which brought together influential figures, policymakers, industry leaders, and experts from across the globe. The summit served as a platform for discussing the potential of AI in promoting development and fostering collaboration among various stakeholders.

Al Saadi reiterated the importance of collaboration between the government, private sector, and civil society in achieving the goals set out in Oman Vision 2040. He emphasised that the successful implementation of AI in Oman requires a holistic approach that balances the needs of different segments of society and ensures inclusivity.

The insights shared by Talal al Saadi at the Oman AI Summit highlight the commitment of the Ministry of Interior Oman and the Omani government to harness the benefits of AI while safeguarding the interests of individuals and society at large. The proposed steps towards a dedicated AI law demonstrate a proactive approach towards shaping an enabling environment for AI adoption and driving sustainable development in the Sultanate of Oman.
