MUSCAT: The Oman Basketball Association (OBA) on Wednesday renewed contracts for the development centres of basketball players in the provinces, as well as the coaches and their assistants. These agreements are part of the athlete development system project launched by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth under the slogan 'From Exploration to Achievement'.
This initiative is part of the government support projects provided by the ministry to sports federations and committees to enhance their performance and increase the effectiveness of the sports performance system.
In alignment with the objectives of Oman sports and the visionary goals of Oman Vision 2040, a signing ceremony was held in the presence of Jaber bin Mohammed al Shabibi, Director of the National Teams Affairs Department, and project director of the Athlete Development System at the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth. The event also witnessed the participation of club presidents, representatives, coaches from development centres and their assistants, as well as the coaches of the national men's and women's basketball teams.
Dr Ali bin Sallam al Yaarubi, Chairman of OBA, stated at the beginning of the signing ceremony that the renewal of agreements for the management of youth development centres contributes to supporting and expanding the game, reaching more beneficiaries. This project is backed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth with the aim of preparing basketball players and supplying sports clubs and national teams with talented individuals.
He highlighted the renewal of contracts for 11 centres distributed among clubs in various provinces of Oman. These clubs include Bausher, Oman Club, Ahli Sidab, Qurayat and Al Seeb in the Muscat Governorate, Shabab Club in Al Batinah South Governorate, Sohar Club in Al Batinah North Governorate, and clubs in Nizwa, Al Bashayer in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, Salalah Club in Dhofar Governorate, and the centre of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth in Musandam Governorate. Additionally, two centres for girls in the Muscat Governorate were also mentioned.
He mentioned that the OBA benefits from the services of 24 national coaches to manage the technical and training aspects in these 13 centres. These coaches will be signing renewed contracts under the supervision of the national team coaches, Zuhair al Ayashi and Wafaa al Zaghdood. The OBA is committed to monitoring the centres to stay updated on their progress, emphasising that these centres contribute to spreading the game across Oman and graduating qualified players.
Following the official signing, Ali al Yaarubi, Vice-President of the OBA, joined club presidents, representatives, and coaches in signing renewal agreements for the 11 centres across the provinces.
Mohammed al Hasani, Acting Secretary-General of OBA, commented on the success of the centres in nurturing talents who have actively participated in various age-group competitions.
He highlighted the impressive figures, with the 11 centres collectively accommodating around 220 players, while the two girls centres cater to 40 players. Managed by 24 national coaches and assistants, these centres play a crucial role in empowering national coaches for effective training across diverse age groups.
