Muscat: Dawam, a job portal, launched a freelancing service targeting retirees and experts under the auspices of His Highness Sayyid Dr Kamel bin Fahd Al Said, Assistant Secretary-General for the Office of Deputy Prime Minister for Cabinet Affairs, and Dr Mahad bin Said Baowain, Minister of Labor, in Muscat on Tuesday.
In her keynote address, Chairperson of Dawam, Her Highness Sayyida Meyyan Bint Shihab Al Said, highlighted Oman Vision 2040 emphasis on technology and employment, “The vision gives priority to Omani youths' training and qualification and creating suitable job opportunities. It is rooted in the deep belief of His Majesty the Sultan in the importance of Omani youth and job creation.” The platform will serve as a means to support the local economy and provide employment opportunities, she said Speaking to the Observer, Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Dawam, Laila al Harthi, shared some insight into the platform. “Dawam platform is a technology solution focusing on the labor market. It functions as a marketplace where job seekers can apply through the platform, and companies or organizations can register directly. It's similar to the concept of LinkedIn but is a comprehensive system targeting local experts. We've recently launched a freelancing platform that specifically focuses on experts and retired individuals in Oman, aiming to promote them in the international market.” According to al Harthi, the platform will serve to utilise the expertise of retired individuals and help them to generate income.
“We believe we have a pool of valuable experts who are retired. Due to recent early retirements in the country, we aim to utilise these experienced hands. Our platform provides a means for retired experts to share their knowledge with SMEs.Our aim is to benefit from it by connecting these experts with start-ups,” she said.
According to al Harthi, the platform, which launched in 2019 as a part-time job search platform, now boasts over 150,000 users and 3,000 registered companies.
The event also included the signing of multiple MOUs between Dawam and the National Employment Program, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, and Oman Oil to support freelancers in Oman.
The platform is the second local freelancing platform to be endorsed by the National Employment Programme, which in recent years has unveiled an ambitious plan to boost the freelancing environment in the Sultanate of Oman.
