MUSCAT: Al Mouj Muscat Marathon for the year 2024 is set to kick off on January 26 and 27, at Al Mouj Muscat. Organised by the Sabco Sports Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, this event aims to encourage community members and participants to lead more active, healthy, and vibrant lives. Anticipating the participation of approximately 12,000 individuals, including Omani residents and visitors of various ages and expertise levels, including elite runners.
Samira al Shukaili, the Director of the Sports Activity Department at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, highlighted the support of the ministry for the Al Mouj Muscat Marathon is in line with the strategic vision of Omani sports towards creating a sports-oriented society. Al Shukaili added health and well-being of the community are of utmost priority, and supporting this prominent sports event in Oman will contribute to building a healthy and active community, and promoting a healthy lifestyle. She emphasised that this race is an opportunity to showcase the beauty of Oman with the presence of the local audience and participants from around the world, serving as an investment in sports tourism in Oman.
Ali al Ajmi, the General Manager of Sabco Sports, the organising entity of the Al Mouj Muscat Marathon, stated that the event aims to highlight the importance of physical activity from a young age and the various sports activities available in Oman throughout the year. With an expected participation of around 12,000 runners from different parts of the world, facing personal challenges and breaking their records will be an inspiring scene. Being part of this dedicated community will motivate others to set their own goals, becoming part of a flourishing and growing national community.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth is dedicated to promoting and developing sports events to encourage a healthier lifestyle in line with the goals of Oman Vision 2040 to build a sustainable and healthy society. To foster this culture among the youth, the ministry also oversees the Omani Day for Physical Activity every year on October 2 to highlight the importance of physical activity among the Omani communities.
This year's marathon will feature five categories: the 42.2 km Marathon, the 21.1 km Half Marathon (open to participants aged 17 and above), a 10 km race (participants aged 15 and above), a 5 km race (participants aged 12 and above), and a Children's Race category with tracks of 1 km, 2 km, and 3 km.
