Education today faces a considerable challenge due to the digital divide, characterized by disparities and inequalities in technology access and utilization. According to (Americanschool.edu. blog, 12/ 2020), "the digital divide in education is the gap between those with sufficient knowledge of and access to technology and those without, according to the ACT. For example, a student who has multiple laptops in their home and has access to high-speed broadband likely will have better educational success than someone who has one computer to share with their entire family and only has dial-up internet access" (https://soeonline.american.edu/blog/digital-divide-in-education, access on 29/ 11/ 2023).


In their survey-based study on bridging the digital divide in education, the researchers Vassilakopoulou& Hustad (2020) pointed out that the extant literature has increased understanding of the multifaceted nature of the digital divide, showing that it entails more than access to information and communication resources. Research indicates that digital inequality mirrors to a significant extent offline inequality related to socioeconomic resources. Bridging digital divides is critical for sustainable digitalized societies.


The conclusions in the study referred to above, confirm the digital inequalities have emerged as a growing concern in modern societies. In this context, (Afzal& Daud, 2023) elucidate the compelling reasons that render bridging the digital divide a crucial imperative in digital learning communities as follow: 1. Equity in Education: The digital divide exacerbates existing educational inequalities. By studying access and use of technology in education, researchers can identify the gaps and disparities that exist among different socioeconomic groups, communities, and regions. This knowledge is crucial for policymakers and educators to develop targeted interventions and initiatives aimed at bridging the divide. 2. Bridging the Achievement Gap: Access to technology in education can significantly impact students' academic achievement. Understanding how technology is being used, or the lack thereof, educators can implement evidence-based approaches to bridge the achievement gap and identify the strategies and practices that are most effective in improving educational outcomes. 3. Digital Literacy and Future Readiness: In today's digital age, digital literacy is a fundamental skill that is essential to students' future success. By studying the access and use of technology in education, researchers can identify the gaps in digital literacy skills and develop strategies to enhance them. 4. Enhancing Teaching and Learning: Technology has the potential to transform the teaching and learning experience. Through the study of access and use of technology in education, researchers can examine the effectiveness of different educational technologies and digital tools. This knowledge can inform educators about the most effective ways to integrate technology into their teaching practices, leading to enhanced student engagement, collaboration, and personalized learning experiences. 5. Policy and Resource Allocation: The study of the digital divide provides valuable insights for policymakers and education administrators in making informed decisions regarding resource allocation and policy development.
