Muscat: The Ministry of Social Development launched its inaugural Family Guidance and Counselling Programme on Sunday for the academic year 2023/2024. The launch was held under the auspices of Mohammed bin Ahmed al Mahrouqi, Director General of Persons with Disabilities Affairs at the ministry.

The programme is tailored for families and guardians of individuals with disabilities enrolled in affiliated rehabilitation centres. These centres include the National Autism Center, Al Aman Rehabilitation Center, and the Assessment and Vocational Rehabilitation Center The week-long programme aims to strengthen communication with families, involve them in the rehabilitation process, motivate them to engage and interact, provide guidance on undesirable behaviours and their treatment, and assist parents in monitoring behaviour and intervention methods to reduce its severity.

Additionally, it aims to familiarise them with activities and skills that can be implemented at home to utilise leisure time, helps parents acquire the necessary skills to support the child's rehabilitation plan and assess their child's progress through mid-year rehabilitation reports. This is alongside maintaining the level of progress to ensure it does not regress due to the child being on vacation.

The opening day included honouring children enrolled in inclusive educational schools, with 46 individuals being integrated through partial, full, and vocational courses. The programme seeks to enhance effective communication with families and empower them to support their children's rehabilitation plan by monitoring and evaluating the impact of improvement through mid-year evaluation.
