MUSCAT: Ministry of Social Development will be organising the closing ceremony of the Laboratory for the Development of Services and Programmes for Persons with Disabilities on Wednesday.
The conclusion of the Labs for the differently abled people, held under the auspices of Sultan bin Salim al Habsi, Minister of Finance, is usually organised to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The event is organised by the Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) in cooperation with Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit, and in partnership with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labour, private sector establishments, civil society institutions and personnel and organisations working in fields related to persons with disabilities, highlighting the all round support needed for the upliftment of the services to persons with disabilities.
"The lab’s theme focuses on the need for unity in action to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for persons with disabilities, and aims to align services and programmes for persons with disabilities with Oman Vision 2040," a note from the ministry said.
Number of people with disabilities represents about 2.3 per cent of the Omani population and is on an increasing mode. The Sultanate of Oman has been providing several services and facilities for people with disabilities and recently, the Ministry of Social Development has launched the guide of 'Services and Facilities for Persons with Disabilities', which elucidates all the services and facilities provided to them by various government and private agencies.
The Ministry of Social Development is on a mission to provide rehabilitation services sourced from private centres and providing it for free to people with disabilities. They include providing prosthetic devices, issuance of car parking permits for people with disabilities and medical facilities for citizens and residents, besides allocating play corners for children with disabilities.
The people with disabilities, prosthetics and orthotics, can avail treatment and rehabilitation services from the Ministry of Health by the Hearing, Balance and Speech Unit at Al Nahdha Hospital for people with hearing disabilities, mental health services provided to people with disabilities at Al-Masara Hospital, and respiratory care services for them when required. This is in addition to the provision of assistive hearing devices 'cochlear implants', and the disbursement of auxiliary aids to the people with disabilities.
