MUSCAT, JAN 9

Dr Ali al Shidhani, the Under-Secretary of Oman's Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, delivered an inspiring speech during the first day of the Middle East Space Conference in Muscat. Dr Al Shidhani shed light on the investment opportunities within Oman's space sector, outlining the country's incredible potential and its strategic advantages in leveraging space technology for economic growth.

Under the theme ‘Space sector in Oman: Evolvement and investment opportunities‘ Dr. Al Shidhani introduced several groundbreaking projects aimed at elevating Oman's space industry to new heights. Each initiative promises to attract global partnerships, capitalize on valuable resources, and position Oman as a major player in the space market.

The first project, a Space Cloud Partnership, sets the stage for collaboration with leading space and cloud partners. By combining space-based cloud or satellite data services with edge computing and data analytics, Oman aims to seamlessly transfer space data to users across the globe. With 21 submarine cables ensuring robust internet connectivity, this project opens doors to a multitude of services, including satellite TTC (Telemetry, Tracking, and Command).

Harnessing its strategic geographical location, the second project focuses on establishing a Ground Station (GS) hub. Oman's proximity to the equator, coupled with its clear skies year-round, offers an ideal locale for hosting ground stations. The global ground station services market is projected to reach a substantial $7.96 billion by 2030, making Oman an attractive destination for satellite operators and companies providing GS as a service. With its extensive submarine cable network, Oman aims to facilitate real-time data transmission for TTC and develop cutting-edge data analytics services.

In its pursuit of direct access to satellite constellations, Oman presents the third project: a Direct Receiving Station (DRS). This investment opportunity offers foreign partners a modular system for fast acquisition, storage, processing, analysis, and distribution of satellite imagery and data. By meeting the data needs of Oman and other countries, investors can secure long-term contracts with governments and private sectors worldwide. Users, in turn, benefit from real-time data for the development of applications and solutions.

Recognising the pool of qualified STEM graduates in Oman, the fourth project revolves around the manufacturing and assembly of space products and technologies. Positioned as a regional hub, Oman aims to attract manufacturers to meet the global demands of various space-related products. From satellite ground station components to antenna receivers and solar cells suitable for applications beyond space, Oman's infrastructure and logistical capabilities make it an ideal location for manufacturing and assembly.

Finally, leveraging Oman's strategic position along the equator and its access to the Indian Ocean, the fifth project proposes a Launch Site Partnership. By establishing a spaceport in a non-residential area, Oman seeks to capitalize on its digital connectivity to the rest of the world through sea ports and stable logistics services. The strategic location and vast coastline of Oman offer ample space for launching satellites of any scale.

Dr Al Shidhani's speech underscored the immense potential of Oman's space industry, emphasizing the factors that set the country apart. With a market size nearing $200 million and continuing to grow, Oman's space sector is positioning itself for significant expansion. Supported by world-class legislation and regulations, the country ratified international space treaties and agreements, fostering a conducive regulatory environment. Oman's clear strategic direction for the industry is further highlighted by its national space policy and an executive programme set from 2023 to 2033.

Additionally, Oman's commitment to space exploration is demonstrated by the establishment of the first star-gazing reserve in the region, spanning 386 square kilometers. The recent hosting of AMADEE 18, an internationally acclaimed Mars analog field simulation in the Dhofar region, further solidifies Oman's presence in the global space community.
