The Customs Declaration System, a mechanism that has revolutionised the cross-border movement of goods, is set for further enhancements designed to boost trade competitiveness in the Sultanate of Oman.

Key initiatives being mulled for implementation to this end comprise the following:

• Customs warehouses investment initiative: Attracting foreign investment and diversifying the economy.

• Bridge of linkage: Connecting customs, shipping agents, and seafarers for seamless collaboration.

• AI integration: Optimising workflows and enhancing decision-making through artificial intelligence.

• Authorized economic operator programme: Streamlining procedures for trusted traders.

• Pre-clearance and post-audit: Ensuring faster border crossings and efficient compliance.

• Express mail declaration: Adapting to the e-commerce boom and accommodating evolving trade needs.

Since its launch in 2015, the Customs Declaration System has helped streamline processes encompassing the import and exports of goods, while also boosting efficiency as well. The system, a type of customs declaration, has facilitated millions of declarations, saving businesses time and money.

In just eight years, the system has seen remarkable achievements. Permits are now issued in seconds, a significant improvement from the previous process. Over one million declarations have been made, highlighting the widespread adoption and impact. This success story has been recognized by prestigious awards, including the 2018 Best Integrated Government Project Award.

The system is not just about speed; it fosters collaboration. Over 73 government and private entities are linked, creating a transparent and efficient trade environment. This connectivity earned the country the top spot in the Gulf's 2020 cross-border trade index, solidifying its position as a regional leader.

The system's impact extends beyond the region. In 2020, it ranked first in the world for handling container ships, a testament to its operational excellence.

The system offers a diverse range of 496 electronic customs services, including the innovative secure customs corridor initiative that ensures seamless movement of goods between ports, free zones, and warehouses. The user-friendly customs services application provides access to vital information and services anytime, anywhere.

Businesses across the country are benefiting from the system's efficiency. Faster clearances, reduced costs, and improved transparency are driving positive sentiment and boosting trade.

With its ambitious future plans, the system promises to continue evolving, solidifying Oman’s position as a leader in efficient and transparent customs operations.
